Have you explored Categories? Categories will feed into 13 different reports and allow you to filter your Clients/Matters tab by the various types.
You can also set up Billing Categories which allow you to pull your invoices by batches. Billing Categories feed into some reports and you can also filter your Clients/Matters tab by Billing Category type.
