When you go to the payment screen and type in the client and you don't know what matter the payment is for, it would be nice to see the amount due and see that matches the payment you are holding. Then, you can match the payment to that matter. This is when the client has not provided an invoice number to reference what they are paying.

Due to performance issues, it is not possible to display the outstanding balance inside the Client-Matter dropdown. However, you should now see a paper icon after selecting the Client-Matter on the Payments screen. On mouse hover, it will show you the Outstanding Invoices Balance for the respective matter, the Unallocated payments and the Trust Balance:
This does not help me at all.
The check will be for multiple projects/matters, so I need to allocate many projects/matters from the payment screen.

You could navigate to the Sent Invoice screen and match the payment amount. Upon clicking the Payment icon, you'll be redirected to the Payment screen where the Payment Amount will be prepopulated.
