The benefit of downloading an invoice in .xls format is to be able to run subtotals or examine how changes in entries would change results. But the system creates a spreadsheet with extraneous rows that break up columns making this very difficult. Also, the resulting spreadsheet does not use formulas to generate totals, so changes are difficult.
